Relocating Tips
Relocating Tips Overview
Relocating can be quite a stressful time; it’s nowadays not simply a matter of packing your belongings and moving to your new home.
Our lives have become more complicated and as such we are involved with more organisations than ever before.
Be it as a client, employee, recipient of news and information or a subscription to an industry body, we are doing more, and are involved with a broader range of outside entities than we were 10 years ago.
AussieWise would like to make this time a little less stressful by providing a tips list which should be considered by anyone who is in the process of moving, or may move in the near future.
What should I do prior to relocating?
| • |
Ensure a mail redirection form is complete and paid up with the relevant dates and details through Australia Post – You can choose a period of 3 to 12 months at the outset and this can be extended if required |
| • |
Create a list of all companies which you receive mail from, and prepare a standardised letter for all of them specifying your new details and from which date these details will be effective from. A follow up call to these companies is also advisable to ensure that appropriate action has been taken to amend your details |
| • |
Ensure that you have contacted all the utility companies (gas, electricity, phone) well in advance and advise them of the cut off date at the old premises, and the activation date at the new premises (if the same utility company services that area) |
| • |
If moving from a rental property into a home you have purchased then you need to consult your estate agent or landlord to arrange inspection and clarify exactly what needs to be done to leave the premises in ‘acceptable’ condition. Tenancy contracts vary so we advise you consult with your agent or landlord so they can provide you with accurate information on what obligations you have as a tenant who is vacating |
| • |
If you decide to pack your own goods then clearly mark, label and group packing boxes so the process of moving into your new property is made that much easier. For example; kitchen ware, bedroom 1, bedroom 2, lounge etc |
| • |
Ensure that all of your goods are accounted for, check the garage, under the staircase, in the attic and any other place which is used infrequently. The last thing you want is to lose a treasured memento or an item of sentimental value. |
| • |
Prepare an essentials package in the event there is a delay in delivery of your household items or other unforseen issues which may arise. Be sure to include some basics like; candles, a torch, coffee/tea, long life milk, bottled water, packaged foods and so on |
What should I ask of the removals company?
Your first step is to ensure you get at least three quotes from removals companies and when you do you need to ask them the below questions to see what you’re actually getting for your dollar:
| • |
Do they have transit insurance only or is packing insurance included? |
| • |
What does the insurance cover and to what value? |
| • |
How do they expect items packed if you decide to do the packing? |
| • |
What recourse do you have if an item is damaged in the process of being moved/packed? |
| • |
What time will they deliver? |
| • |
Ask if paying in cash will lower the final quote |
| • |
Is there a surcharge if you pay by credit card, and if so how much? |
